This lengthy East Sussex walk traverses a section of the South Downs using the South Downs Way and other paths and tracks. A Historic Cast Iron Bridge built 1880 The bridge links Southease Parish which was divided by a 'cut' in the Ouse created in 1791 to improve the river's flow. Keep walking until the sound of traffic fades and you are left with the sound of crickets and birds. You take a left along the road, then take the small path to the right just next to the bend in road sign. You then have an exhilarating finish over Mount Caburn that brings you directly down into the part of Lewes with the best tea options (Cliffe High Street). A few yards past the shop, go right through a bridle gate, follow a trodden path across pasture to another gate and then climb steadily up on to the Caburn downland, with a fence on your left. It's lovely to gaze at the route you've just taken from the train - I like to wave at others following in my footsteps, they may not see me but it makes me smile.
