There were a few Monday morning oh-dark thirty hook-ups at the Oak Orchard Rivermouth. This mid week warmup should likely only stall the right of drop and clear in the Oak and other area smaller waterways. Without overflow levels now, some might be inclined to call it only slightly high. Since we are not getting cold temps and/or snow, hopefully we can get rain along with the warm temps to help maintain flows. These 23 & 25 lb Salmon were caught in 450 to 500 fow.40 to 120 down, using Dipseys 180 to 220 just slightly west of the Oak. FREE boat launching until the Spring! Proceeding upstream thru the Oak downstream frog water areas the reports are quieter but I suspect guys are into a decent skein bite. Most action came on our Cannon Downriggers fished 30-50 down with sliders. 1764 Oak Orchard Rd (Rte. Certain days youll notice that salmon movement by seeing them crashing around, but as often as not that movement seems to go on quietly. All that cooler water we have again in the Oak could surely be spreading out the fish and drifts are going to need to be down and slow for best hook up chances. After a few decent runs, the fish was starting to cooperate That was until it got to the back of the boat. Anglers at the dam are getting their steelhead hook ups, including a few nice fish. Flies and egg imaginations have been the best baits for the salmon. We fished 90-120 feet of water, just slightly east and west of port. Savvy trib anglers anticipate good hook-up chances on the backside of high flows when reasonable weather and water conditions coincide! We used wire dipseys with herring strip fly rigs. Guys have so far caught a few browns and a few steelhead and a few cohos and a few Atlantics. No prepared food will be served and the Catch and Release Fly Fishing Tourney will not take place for 2021. Christmas rain brought all the trib flows up with stained water color. Flows in the Oak are about medium and barely stained with about 2 feet of visibility for now. Theres still lots of upstream headwater swamp supplies in the Oak. The fish are going to turn on and off there so persistence is the name of the game and long and light presentations. Our best set up was a 10 white double crush glow Spindoctor with A-TOM-MIK glow warship twinkie head. Cover lots of water and get the drift down and slow and you could find a chromer! Value 4.2. Drifts now will definitely be more productive then a few days ago. The other area smaller tribs I have not laid eyes on directly and should have something like medium flows. Any significant precipitation could raise all the trib flows back high and dirty. Trout action is starting to improve according to Lisa Drabczyk with Creek Road Bait and Tackle. Spring will offer up only so many cold water chances! Longer range forecast is chance of cold again after that with another snowstorm for end next week. Well see how long any cold weather may last (theres been no prolonged cold spell yet) and whether this is the stretch of weather we might have typically seen in January. Still light fishing pressure yet the regulars who are getting out there are getting their hookups like nearer the dam. So far a nice start to the action, forecast looking mostly dry and seasonably cool right thru the upcoming weekend. A good WNW wind thru last night probably moved more fish near shore or into the tribs from Lake Ontario but dont look for those fish to loiter in estuary or rivermouth spots at this point in the season.
